Eat well now. Look after your health for what comes next.

What you eat can influence your heart health, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, gut health, energy, muscle strength, sporting performance, fertility and how well you age.

That’s a lot more than what’s happening on the scales.

At Optimum Intake, our dietitians help men use nutrition to tackle the health issues that matter to them. You might want to lower your cholesterol, get on top of your blood sugar, sort out ongoing gut problems, improve your training and recovery, support your fertility, maintain muscle as you get older, or simply make sure you’re doing the right things for your future health.

We make nutrition practical. We’ll look at what you’re eating now, what’s happening with your health and what you want to achieve, then help you focus on changes that are realistic and worthwhile.

No perfect diet required. No need to overhaul everything you eat.

Just personalised, evidence-based nutrition advice that makes sense for you and your life.

Our Accredited Practising Dietitians provide men’s health nutrition support from our Tuggerah clinic on the Central Coast and Broadmeadow clinic in Newcastle, with telehealth appointments available Australia-wide.

What could a men’s health dietitian help me with?

You don’t need to wait until you’ve been diagnosed with a health condition to see a dietitian.

Sometimes there’s something specific you want help with. Sometimes your GP has suggested making changes to your diet. And sometimes you simply know you’d like to eat better but aren’t sure where to start.

Our dietitians can support men with:

  • high cholesterol and triglycerides
  • high blood pressure and heart health
  • prediabetes, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
  • metabolic health
  • fatty liver disease (MASLD)
  • gut health, IBS, bloating, reflux and digestive concerns
  • sports nutrition, training and recovery
  • building and maintaining muscle
  • low energy or difficulty meeting nutrition needs
  • men’s fertility and preconception nutrition
  • healthy ageing
  • maintaining strength and muscle as you get older
  • bone health
  • nutrition during and after cancer treatment, including prostate cancer
  • vegetarian and vegan nutrition
  • food allergies and intolerances
  • eating disorders, disordered eating and complicated relationships with food
  • nutrition alongside weight or body composition concerns.

You may have more than one thing going on. That’s common. We’ll look at the bigger picture and help you prioritise what is most useful for your health.

Nutrition for men’s health at every stage of life

What you need from food can change throughout your life, and so can the reasons you might want some support.

Your 20s and 30s: energy, performance, gut health and building healthy foundations

Life can get busy quickly. Work, training, socialising, takeaway, supplements and irregular meals can all influence how well you’re eating.

You might see one of our dietitians for help with:

  • sports and gym nutrition
  • building muscle and supporting training
  • energy, recovery and performance
  • gut symptoms or IBS
  • Eating in secret / Binge eating
  • understanding protein and supplements
  • eating well around shift work or a busy schedule
  • male fertility and preconception nutrition
  • vegetarian or vegan nutrition
  • body image, restrictive eating or disordered eating.

Good nutrition during these years can support how you feel and perform now while helping establish habits that support your future health.

Your 30s and 40s: keeping an eye on the numbers

This is often when the numbers on a blood test or health check start to change.

Maybe your GP has mentioned your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose or liver health. Perhaps there’s a strong family history of diabetes or heart disease and you’re wondering what you can do now.

Nutrition support can help with:

  • cholesterol and triglycerides
  • blood pressure
  • prediabetes and diabetes prevention
  • fatty liver disease
  • cardiovascular health
  • gut health
  • fertility
  • energy and meal planning
  • maintaining muscle and fitness.

You don’t need a perfect diet. We can help you identify the changes likely to have the greatest impact and find ways to make them work in your real life.

Your 40s, 50s and 60s: investing in your future health

Nutrition becomes increasingly important for protecting cardiovascular and metabolic health while maintaining strength and muscle.

This can be a good time to talk to a dietitian if you have:

  • high cholesterol
  • high blood pressure
  • prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
  • fatty liver disease
  • heart disease or increased cardiovascular risk
  • changing energy levels
  • concerns about maintaining muscle
  • digestive problems
  • a recent health diagnosis
  • prostate cancer or another cancer diagnosis.

Our dietitians can work alongside your GP and other health professionals to help turn health recommendations into practical changes to what and how you eat.

Your 60s and beyond: staying strong, well and independent

Good nutrition remains important as we get older.

Eating enough energy and protein, maintaining muscle, protecting bone health and managing chronic health conditions can all contribute to staying active and independent.

Our dietitians can help with:

  • maintaining muscle and strength
  • preventing or managing malnutrition
  • unintentional weight loss
  • reduced appetite
  • protein and energy requirements
  • heart health and diabetes
  • bone health and osteoporosis
  • nutrition during cancer treatment and recovery
  • changing nutrition needs as you age.

The goal is to help you keep doing the things that matter to you.

Has your GP told you that something needs to change?

“Your cholesterol is a bit high.”

“Your blood pressure is creeping up.”

“Your blood sugar is getting close to the prediabetes range.”

“You have fatty liver.”

“You should probably work on your diet.”

Sound familiar?

Knowing that something needs to change and knowing what to actually do about it can be two very different things.

There’s also a lot of conflicting nutrition information online. Cut carbs. Eat more protein. Fast. Avoid fat. Eat less meat. Take supplements.

Our dietitians can help you make sense of it.

We’ll look at your health, blood results, current eating habits, family history, lifestyle and goals, then help you identify practical nutrition changes that are relevant to you.

Men’s nutrition is about much more than weight

Health conversations with men can quickly become conversations about body weight.

At Optimum Intake, we look much wider.

Nutrition can influence your heart and metabolic health, blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, digestive health, muscle and bone health, sporting performance, energy levels, fertility and your relationship with food.

If weight or body composition is something you want to discuss, there is space for that conversation too. Our dietitians use a respectful, non-diet and individualised approach that considers your overall health and wellbeing.

You won’t be handed a restrictive diet and sent home to figure it out yourself.

What happens when I see a dietitian?

Your first appointment gives us time to understand what’s going on.

Depending on why you’re seeing us, your dietitian may ask about your health and medical history, blood results, medications, supplements, usual eating patterns, gut symptoms, exercise or training, work and family routines, and what you’d like to get out of seeing us.

Then we’ll work with you to decide where to start.

That could mean improving the balance of your meals, increasing fibre, changing the types of fats you eat, getting enough protein, fuelling properly around exercise, managing gut symptoms, improving nutritional adequacy or finding easier ways to eat well when life is busy.

The advice will depend on you.

Our aim is for you to leave understanding what you’re working on, why it matters and how you’re going to do it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to see a men's health dietitian?

No. You can book directly with Optimum Intake without a GP referral. If you are eligible for a Medicare rebate under a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan, you will need an appropriate referral from your GP.

Do dietitians help with men's heart health and high cholesterol?

Yes. Dietitians can provide nutrition support for cardiovascular risk factors and conditions including high cholesterol, high triglycerides and high blood pressure. Your dietitian can review your current eating pattern and help you make evidence-based changes relevant to your individual health needs.

Can a dietitian help with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes?

Yes. Nutrition is an important part of managing blood glucose and type 2 diabetes. Dietitian support can also be useful when your blood glucose or HbA1c has started increasing and you want practical advice about what to do next.

Can a dietitian help with men's fertility?

Nutrition and lifestyle factors can form part of preconception health for men. A dietitian can assess the nutritional quality and adequacy of your diet and provide individualised advice to support your overall health while you and your partner are trying to conceive.

Can a dietitian help me build muscle?

Yes. Your dietitian can assess whether you’re meeting your energy and protein requirements and help you plan nutrition around training, recovery and your individual goals. We can also help you make sense of sports nutrition products and supplements.

Can I see a dietitian for gut problems?

Yes. Our dietitians support clients with IBS, bloating, altered bowel habits, reflux and other digestive concerns. Where appropriate, we work alongside your GP or gastroenterologist.

Will you put me on a diet?

Our approach focuses on personalised, sustainable nutrition strategies rather than restrictive dieting. We’ll consider your health, preferences, lifestyle, culture, relationship with food and what you want to achieve. Sometimes that includes a meal plan, learning how to do meal planning, give you resources for food swaps, teach you how to cook different foods, essentially we will work to enhance your diet, but not in a restrictive way!

Where can I see a men's health dietitian?

Optimum Intake offers face-to-face men’s health dietitian appointments at our Tuggerah clinic on the Central Coast and Broadmeadow clinic in Newcastle. Telehealth dietitian appointments are also available Australia-wide.
