Helping You Meet the New Meal Requirements For In-Home Aged Care.

Aged Care Meal Requirements Are Changing — Are You Ready?

From 1 November 2025, all aged care providers delivering meals in the home will be required to meet new meal requirements under the Aged Care Act 2024.

This means:

  • Meals, snacks and drinks must be nutritious, appetising, and appropriate for the needs and preferences of older people.

  • Providers must engage a dietitian at least annually to assess their meals and provide recommendations.

  • A Quality Assurance Framework must be in place, including regular feedback from older people.

  • Providers remain responsible for compliance, even if meals are produced by third-party suppliers.

Failing to meet these obligations can put your registration, reputation, and client trust at risk.

At Optimum Intake Dietitians, we partner with aged care providers to make compliance simple, so you can focus on supporting your clients with confidence.

What The New Meal Requirements Involve

Under the Aged Care Rules 2024, all in-home aged care providers delivering meals through the Support at Home Program (SaH), Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP), Multi-Purpose Services (MPSP), or National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Flexible Aged Care Program (NATSIFACP) must demonstrate:

  • Nutritious meals: Meeting older adults’ increased needs for protein, calcium, vitamins B6 & D, and other essential nutrients.

  • Appetising meals: Appealing in aroma, appearance, taste, and texture—because food must be enjoyable to be effective.

  • Respect for needs and preferences: Catering to cultural, religious, and specialised dietary needs (e.g., vegetarian, halal, gluten-free, texture modified).

  • Continuous improvement: Acting on dietitian recommendations and client feedback through a structured Quality Assurance Framework.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What happens if I don't meet the new requirements?

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission can take regulatory action, including penalties, conditions on registration, or revoking registration.

Do I need a dietitian if I subcontract meal services?

Yes. Even when using third-party meal suppliers, providers remain responsible for compliance. You must obtain evidence of dietitian review or engage a dietitian directly.

How often do meals need to be reviewed?

At least once annually, though more frequent reviews are encouraged, especially when menus change or client feedback highlights concerns.

Can assessments be done remotely?

Yes. While onsite reviews are preferred (to assess texture, aroma, and presentation), remote assessments are acceptable when dietitian access is limited.
