How DVA Dietitian Services Work
Step 1. Speak with your GP or medical specialist
To access DVA-funded dietitian services, you will need a referral from:
- Your GP
- A medical specialist
- A hospital discharge team
A referral allows you to access a treatment cycle of up to 12 sessions or 12 months of care, depending on your individual needs and timeframe of support.
Our team can help guide you through the referral process if you are unsure where to start.
Step 2. Comprehensive Nutrition Assessment
Your first appointment is designed to gain a detailed understanding of your health, nutrition concerns, goals and daily routines.
Initial consultations generally include:
- Nutrition assessment and diagnosis
- Review of medical conditions and medications
- Body composition and anthropometric assessment
- Meal and menu ideas
- Nutrition coaching and counselling
- Goal setting and care planning
Our dietitians work collaboratively with you to develop a realistic and practical plan that aligns with your lifestyle, preferences and health priorities.
Step 3. Personalised Care Planning
At Optimum Intake Dietitians, we believe nutrition care should always have purpose, direction and measurable outcomes.
As part of your care, your dietitian develops a Patient Care Plan that outlines:
- Your nutrition goals
- Recommended frequency of appointments
- Areas of focus for treatment
- Expected outcomes
- Progress measures and reviews
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs requires treatment to be based on assessed clinical needs and best-practice care, with the client remaining at the centre of the treatment process.
Your care plan can also be updated over time if your health circumstances, goals or clinical needs change.

- Unintentional weight loss
- Frailty and reduced strength
- Dysphagia and texture modified diets

Detailed diet analysis and menu planning service.
This goes beyond a standard consultation and can include:

Our aim is to make nutrition support accessible, practical and easier to fit into everyday life.
Communication with Your GP and Healthcare Team
At Optimum Intake Dietitians, we believe the best outcomes happen when your healthcare team works together.
As part of your DVA dietitian care, we maintain communication with your GP and other relevant healthcare providers to help ensure your nutrition support aligns with your broader medical care and health goals.
Throughout your treatment journey, your dietitian may provide updates regarding:
- Your nutrition concerns and goals
- Assessment findings
- Progress with treatment
- Changes in weight, appetite or nutritional status
- Recommendations for ongoing support
- Nutrition supplement recommendations where appropriate
- Outcomes achieved during the treatment cycle
The Department of Veterans’ Affairs requires allied health providers to work collaboratively with the client and their usual GP as part of coordinated care.
At the completion of each treatment cycle, our dietitians provide a report back to your GP outlining:
- The number and frequency of sessions completed
- Your progress toward nutrition goals
- Summary of the treatment provided
- Relevant assessment findings
- Recommendations for ongoing care or further treatment if clinically required
This communication helps your GP stay informed about your progress and supports continuity of care across your healthcare team.

- Appointments are based on genuine clinical need
- Services are goal-oriented and purposeful
